The Pembrokeshire Darwin Science Festival is organised on behalf of the
Darwin Centre for Biology and Medicine in order to promote public engagement
with science.
The Darwin Centre's mission statement is: To bring cutting edge science and
entrepreneurship into everyday life through schools, festivals and public
engagement with science and health.
In order to fulfil this, the Festival was launched in 2000. Its key aims
are:
- To foster curiosity driven science
- To instil a better understanding and knowledge of science, technology and
the natural environment.
- To spark interest in young people in particular that will lead them to
higher studies and careers in the sciences
The Festival is one of the top five science festivals in the UK. It has
developed strong links with Pembrokeshire College. In 2002 Pembrokeshire
College won a Beacon Award for Life Sciences for its work with the Darwin
Science Festival. As the result of a feasibility study to look into
establishing a marine science research and sabbatical centre in
Pembrokeshire, the Darwin Centre now has a ten year development plan which
includes expanding and improving the festival and launching a research
programme and sabbatical programme for visiting research scientists. The
excellent relationship with Pembrokeshire College is vital to these aims.
